Antique Victorian Scottish Agate Bloodstone Thistle Garter Pebble Brooch c1890

Beautiful antique Victorian era circa 1890, sterling silver Scottish agate thistle design garter themed pebble brooch with intricate engraving on the front. The stones are classic grey banded Montrose agates, green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum and orange and mustard jasper from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire. Sterling and agate scottish brooches from this era were known as pebble brooches because they feature various regional stones. Pebble brooches are always unique though there are some commonalities to the designs and themes.

Garter themed brooches are highly collectible as they depict the garter that holds argyle hose in place for uniformed members of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. Pebble brooches became quite popular during the reign of Queen Victoria who spent a great deal of time in Scotland and wore these brooches herself. The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original. There is a rich and even patina throughout the silver.

Length: Approximately 1-3/5 (4 cm). Width: Approximately 1-1/3 (3.4 cm). Vintage and/or antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina. This is considered quite normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues. All items are described to the best of my knowledge.
