Antique Scottish Clan Stewart Badge Sterling Silver Plaid Brooch 19th Century Earl of Moray. Please find offered for sale a very collectible, genuine Scottish Clan Stewart Badge.

Made from cast silver (untested) these Clan Badges are very collectible and this early example dates from the 19. The piece is made from cast silver and unmarked which is common for pieces of this period. ATTACHMENT: Horizontal T-style pin with "C" catch.

The Clan Stewart/Stuart had a large number of mottoes throughout history and this piece bears the motto "SALUS PER CHRISTUM"'Salvation through Christ. The Crest: A pelican argent, winged Or, in her nest feeding her young, proper.

The crest and motto together are associated with James Stewart the Earl of Moray. The Stewarts who became monarchs of Scotland were descended from a family who were seneschals (stewards) of Dol in Brittany, France. After the Norman conquest of England, the Stewarts acquired estates in England as the FitzAlan family, also Earls of Arundel.
