Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Scottish Shield and Garter Pebble Brooch. A wonderful Scottish pebble brooch dating back to the Victorian era, circa 1870! Made of sterling silver, the brooch depicts The Order of the Garter design. At the center of the brooch is a shield motif decorated with bluish grey Montrose agate segments and reddish brown jasper segments, wonderful ornate hand engraving decorates the central silver strip and edges. Surrounding it is a large garter which features deep green bloodstone segments all the way around, embellished with hand engraving along the edges, the buckle motif to the side is highly polished.
A pin and'C' clasp attaches to the back, along with a small ring. You may like to utilize the ring for a necklace to attach from to be worn as a pendant. No hallmarks are sighted to the piece, typical of the era and origin, a test indicates sterling silver. A special piece of Scottish history, perfect for any avid Scottish collector. Natural jasper and agate stones (bloodstone and Montrose agate).4cm (1 and 1/2 inches) across. The overall condition of the brooch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear and some patina, the piece presents in immaculate condition for 150 years old!
The agate and jasper stone is superb with no major chips or cracks, although worth a mention is a tiny nick in the lower red jasper stone.
