Victorian Large Sterling Silver Scottish Lovers Knot Pebble Brooch. A wonderful antique Victorian lovers knot brooch, hailing from Scotland from the late 19th century, c1880! Also known as Scottish pebble jewelry, the 3-dimensional piece is crafted in sterling silver and forms the shape of a lovers knot which was a popular motif in Victorian times, often representing'eternal love,''fidelity' and'commitment'. An array of Scottish agate and jasper stones have been inlaid into the round tube design.
The polished agate and jasper stones display beautiful warm Autumnal tones with the jasper stones exhibiting a marble-esque pattern, and a banded pattern to the agate stones. A beautiful hand engraved feather like pattern embellishes the silver... Right down to the flattened ends. The back is plain and has a pin and'C' connection, there is also a ring and jump ring attached which was once used for a safety chain.
Albeit, today a chain could thread through the jump ring allowing the piece to be worn as a unique pendant. This particular lovers knot style brooch can be seen in the'Diana Scarisbrick' "Scottish Jewellery" book, pg 99. A superb piece of Scottish history which would add an impressive accessory to the scarf, lapel or wherever you desire to show it off. Natural Scottish jasper and agate stones, including malachite and banded agate material.
7.5cm (3 inches) long. The condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear there is no dents or damage to the silver.
The stones are in excellent condition except for a tiny corner nick to one of the jasper stones, seen under magnification. A light hand polish has been given to the brooch, however the brooch still leaves behind a natural patina, it can be further polished if you desire. The pin works well with good tension.
