Rare and unique antique Victorian Scottish pebble brooch from the late 1800s in engraved sterling silver and Montrose gray banded agate. This brooch is a formidable and exquisite example of the intricately crafted Scottish jewelry from this era. What is special about this particular brooch is that it features a hanging central ball dropper, a design feature which is quite rare. The diameter of the brooch is approximately 1-1/4 (3.2 cm).
Condition is excellent with original C clasp in good working order, stones firmly in place, and one very tiny nip on one of the stones (please view last photo). No hallmarks, which is typical for this type of jewelry, but tests for 925 sterling silver. Aside from the unusual hanging ball feature, the intricacy of the or the silversmithing work on this brooch stands out both in the engraving and the deep scalloped scalloped border in the center. Some of the most coveted Victorian pebble jewelry features curved stones and sculpture-like three dimensionality. Antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina.
This is considered quite normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues.
All items are described to the best of my knowledge. Pebble jewelry refers to jewelry set with polished gemstones found in Scotland. Polished agate and granite were cut into shapes and set in mosaic patterns in silver (occasionally gold) jewelry, often using many colors in one piece. Genuine antique pebble jewelry was always one of a kind. This jewelry came into fashion after Queen Victoria bought the Balmoral Castle estate in 1848. Agate from the Montrose area in Eastern Scotland is perhaps the most beautiful and serene of all the Scottish stones with a color that is referred to as'dove' gray, an apt and poetic term to describe the color in these stones with fine bands and variations reminiscent of the delicate patterns of bird feathers.
