These highly collectible brooches depict the garter that holds argyle hose in place for uniformed members of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. Exquisitely handcrafted, hand engraved sterling silver (tested, not hallmarked) with a scroll, or perhaps leaf-like, motif is the setting for dove gray banded Montrose agate which has been expertly cut into curved pieces. There are no cracks or chips present on the stones as far as I can see. Scottish Victorian jewelry made from the local stones is often referred to as'pebble jewelry.
Pebble brooches are always unique though there are some commonalities to the designs and themes. Some of the most coveted Victorian pebble jewelry features curved stones and sculpture-like three dimensionality.
Montrose agate is perhaps the most beautiful and serene of all the Scottish stones with a color that is referred to as'dove' gray, an apt and poetic term to describe the color in these stones with fine bands and variations reminiscent of the delicate patterns of bird feathers. The C-clasp and hinge are original and in perfect (sturdy) working order. There is also a suspension loop should you wish to wear it as a pendant.
There is a rich and even patina throughout the silver. Measurements: Approximately 2-1/5" x 1-3/4" (5.6 x 4.4 cm). Vintage and/or antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina. This is considered normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues.
