Antique Victorian Scottish Brooch Sterling Genuine Citrine Bloodstone Agate 1890
Exceptional antique Victorian Scottish "pebble brooch" featuring genuine Cairngorm faceted golden citrine, bloodstone, gray banded agate and jasper set in finely etched sterling silver. There is no mistaking the origin of this brooch as Victorian era Scotland, and all stones are Scottish in origin. There are no marks, which is not uncommon for pieces from this era, but the silver has been tested and all stones are verified. The hinge and C clasp appear to be the original, and correspond to the types of findings seen in Victorian pieces, though the platforms created as a mount for the findings are unusual. CONDITION: PLEASE NOTE the repair work on back which consists of fortification with additional sterling silver. I can't think of a more solid and lasting way to repair a piece of this kind. The brooch feels solid and all stones are in great condition with minor wear commensurate with age. What makes this brooch fascinating is its Star of David design.
Scottish Victorian "pebble brooches" are most often abstract and geometric. The crosses I've seen from Scotland made during this era have all been pendants. Did the artisan who crafted this piece stumble upon the Star of David design coincidentally or deliberately?
And, if it was deliberate, was it made for a Jewish customer? My research reveals that there were several Jewish communities in 19th century Scotland. Overall Diameter: 1-5/8 (4.1 cm).
Vintage and/or antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina. This is considered normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues.
All items are described to the best of my knowledge. Antique Victorian Scottish pebble jewelry refers to jewelry set with, or otherwise including, polished gemstones found in Scotland. Polished agate and granite were cut into shapes and set in mosaic patterns, or intricately carved into bracelet panels, in silver (occasionally gold) jewelry, often using many colors in one piece. Genuine antique pebble jewelry is always one of a kind. This jewelry came into fashion after Queen Victoria bought the Balmoral Castle estate in 1848.
