Antique Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Agate Citrine Pebble Brooch c1890

Elegant antique Victorian Scottish sterling agate pebble brooch with a gorgeous faceted paste "citrine" at the center. Open flowing design with intricate etching on the silver. The agate used in this brooch is Montrose gray banded agate in artfully contrasting shades of light and dark stones.

The central stone is faux "citrine" made from glass. Paste, or faux, gems like these are a lost art unto themselves, and were originally intended not only to stand in for the real thing, but to outdo real stones as far as color and vibrancy. There are no marks on this brooch which is the norm for Scottish sterling jewelry from this era. The original C Clasp is in good working order, all stones are firmly set with not chips, the paste "citrine" shows some wear, commensurate with age, but no damage, breaks or chips. Length: 2 (5.1 cm).

Width: 1-1/2 (3.8 cm). Depth: 1/2 (1.3 cm). Antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina.

This is considered normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues. All items are described to the best of my knowledge. Pebble jewelry refers to jewelry set with, or otherwise including, polished gemstones found in Scotland. Polished agate and granite were cut into shapes and set in mosaic patterns, or intricately carved into bracelet panels, in silver (occasionally gold) jewelry, often using many colors in one piece. Genuine antique pebble jewelry is always one of a kind. This jewelry came into fashion after Queen Victoria bought the Balmoral Castle estate in 1848. Agate from the Montrose area in Eastern Scotland is perhaps the most beautiful and serene of all the Scottish stones with a color that is referred to as'dove' gray, an apt and poetic term to describe the color in these stones with fine bands and variations reminiscent of the delicate patterns of bird feathers.
