Antique sterling silver and banded gray Montrose agate "Lovers Knot" brooch/ pin made in Scotland circa 1880. A lovely and classic example of the intricately crafted Scottish jewelry from this era. These pins are also called pebble brooches because they feature various regional stones. Pebble brooches are always unique though there are some commonalities to the designs and themes.
The expertly handcrafted sterling silver three dimensional design consisting of six interlocking rings. Lover's knots were a popular motif in Victorian times representing eternal love, fidelity and commitment.
No hallmarks which is quite common from this time but it had been tested and is sterling silver. The inlaid stones are gray banded agate from Montrose. The sterling silver is intricately engraved.
Montrose agate is perhaps the most beautiful and serene of all the Scottish stones with a color that is referred to as'dove' gray, an apt and poetic term to describe the color in these stones with fine bands and variations reminiscent of the delicate patterns of bird feathers. This piece has a very solid three dimensional feel. Great overall condition with original pin and C clasp in good working order and all the original stones firmly set. A length of 1-3/4 inches (4.4 cm) is a nice intermediate size.
Length: 1-3/4 (4.4 cm). Width: 1-3/8 (3.5 cm). Overall Depth including clasp: 7/8 (2.2 cm).
