LARGE Ola Gorie Sterling Silver Orkney Scottish Brooch h/m 1970 MAESHOWE DRAGON
This is a fabulous EARLY sterling silver Orkney brooch from Scotland and is in very good condition with beautiful modernist design of the MAESHOWE DRAGON - large size 43mms x 45mms with locking clasp weighing 10.4 grams - stamped with Edinburgh hallmark for 1970 and is a design made famous by Orkney silversmith Ola Gorie and stamped "OMG" makers mark. A second brooch available stamped with very early "OLA" makers mark c. Late 1960s and "Silver" weighing 14.8 grams. Maeshowe Dragon is one of the most instantly recognisable symbols of Orkney and was Ola Gorie's first ever jewellery design launched in 1960. Thought to have been carved in the 12th century, by one of the Norsemen who broke into Maeshowe. Chambered Tomb and carved on the wall.
