Late Georgian Era SCOTTISH AMETHYST & CITRINE THISTLE BROOCH Edinburgh Hallmarks
Late Georgian Scottish Amethyst & Citrine Thistle Brooch, Edinburgh Hallmarks. A magnificent antique Scottish amethyst and citrine brooch from the late Georgian era! The Edinburgh hallmarked piece is made of sterling silver and features a magnificent 3 dimensional thistle motif in a round'target' shape with a curvilinear border. The richly ornate high relief and chased craftsmanship is exceptional. Gleaming from the design is four cabochon golden yellow citrines, along with four skilfully faceted purple amethyst representing the'thistle flowers'. The citrine gems are likely foiled back, displaying a luminous and mesmerizing appearance. A sturdy pin and'C' clasp to the back completes the brooch. The substantial sized piece bears a nice set of hallmarks on the back indicating the piece is from the King George IV or William IV reign with a small stamp of his head.
Other stamps include a sterling standard'thistle' mark, Edinburgh town mark, and the date letter which is difficult to decipher, albeit possibly a gothic'G' which would represent the year 1839. The makers stamp'JWL & Co' is unknown. An intricate piece of Scottish history which today would make an impressive accessory wherever you may prefer to wear...
Gemstones tested by a FGAA Gemmologist with professional gemmological equipment. Duty mark head portrait of King George IV or King William IV, sterling standard'thistle', city mark'three-turreted castle' (Edinburgh), date letter possibly a gothic'G' (year 1839). Makers stamp'JWL & Co'. The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver or gemstones. Some of the amethyst stones have a little bit of wear around the facet edges, however this can only be seen under magnification.
