Quality Victorian Scottish Agate Brooch in Sterling Silver C. 1870 Pebble Brooch

Antique Scottish Agate Brooch This is a fab quality Scottish Pebble wheel or doughnut brooch inlaid with various pieces of Agate - actually there is a lovely collection of coloured agates in this brooch. In solid sterling silver (tested) you only have to turn it over to see what gorgeous quality this is and the fact that it is in such good condition too with just a couple of very very tiny pin pricks. There is a loop for a safety chain or indeed a chain to wear as a pendant.

This dates to around 1870 and has an extended pin I love these Agate Brooches as they are so wearable today, I wear mine at the shoulder fixing a pashmina or scarf. Weight: 13.2g Size: Just over 1 1/2 (4cm) in diameter. Extended pins on brooches are often a good indicator of period. The pins were made longer and extended beyond the edge of a brooch to accommodate the thicker Victorian fabrics that were pre 1880's. Scottish Agate or Pebble Jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria. This love extended to all things Scottish and when the London papers reported that the couple were wearing "polished pebble brooches made from local stones" it set a trend that would last for decades and even spread to Europe. Written examples of this sweeping fashion are to be seen in the novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell in her novel Cranford (1851) set in the Cheshire village of Knutsford where one of the characters - Miss Pole was wearing no less than 7 Scottish pebble brooches!

If you are interested in Scottish Agate Jewellery I can really recommend Scottish Jewellery - A Victorian Passion by Diana Scarisbrick it is a beautiful book full of fabulous quality pictures and packed with information.
