Rare Sterling Silver Burrian Eagle Brooch. Dimensions: Around 2" x 1 5/8" [5.2cm x 4.2 cm] Weight around 22.0g.Hallmarked in Edinburgh with the letter A which indicates 1975. In good vintage condition with minor surface scratches and one small black spot on the front near its claw, have not silver dipped as some folk like the contrast of the slightly tarnished textured areas. Hinge catch and pin are in good working order. Supplied in a lovely Ola Gorie presentation gift box. Burrian is in Harray in the Orkney islands an incised cross was found along with an impressive eagle, quite similar to the one carved on the standing stone at the Brough o' Birsay, a crescent and V rod and mirror symbols.
The cross, like many other remnants of Orkney's past now resides in Edinburgh but the eagle can be viewed at the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall. The last 9 pictures are not part of this listing.
