Scottish Sterling Silver Quaich Drinking Cup J W Kirwan Edinburgh Antique 1910
This antique Scottish Sterling Silver Quaich Drinking Cup by J W Kirwan of Edinburgh is a remarkable piece of history. Crafted in the early 1910s, it showcases a beautiful Victorian style and is composed of Sterling Silver. The brand J W Kirwan is renowned for producing high-quality silver items, and this cup is no exception. It's an excellent addition to any antique collection. Produced in Edenburgh, Scotland in 1910 by J W Kirawan, I believe it was meant for the Scottish market. About 2-1/4" in diameter, 3-1/2" from widest point on handles. The Quaich (pronounced "quake", from the Gaelic word "cuach") has a rich heritage in Scotland - indeed, they are a uniquely Scottish invention, having no apparent connection to any other European drinking vessel. This traditional Scottish drinking vessel was used to offer a guest a cup of welcome and also as a farewell drink, usually a dram of whisky.

Travellers were known to carry a quaich with them. A more romantic Quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair, so that the owner could drink to his lady love; and in 1589 King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Norway a Quaich or "Loving Cup" as a wedding gift. Please look closely at the pictures, they're a fair representation of actual condition (and part of the description).
