This is a simply stunning antique mid Victorian silver brooch. It is a superb example of its kind. It is a large domed design with six petalled outer ring and six pointed star centre. The brooch is set with 12 pieces of beautifully marked Scottish Montrose banded agate in shades of grey. The outer pieces are shaped as petals and the inner ones are diamond shaped, with four upper facets forming a raised point to each. The settings are all closed backs. The upper silver frame is engraved in a foliate design. The back of the brooch is engraved in a flowery Victorian script with two sets of initials, probably the original giver and recipient. It fastens with an extra long pin on a tubular hinge, and a C clasp, which has been re-soldered at some time in the distant past.
The brooch is also fitted with a safety chain. As was common at the time, there is no silver mark, but the brooch has been tested and is silver. Apart from the solder to the C clasp, the brooch is in excellent, if not remarkable, condition, belying its 150 years of age. Measures approx 2.1 in diameter.
