Offered here is a stunning antique Victorian Sterling silver Hunting Trophy brooch. Scottish Brooch Foot Scottish Grouse foot Kilt pin Art Nouveau with citrine. Excellent condition marked with many sterling silver marking but hard to take photo because of the fire cover. Maker mark WBS in rhombus mark. Originate from private collection in London.
The Scots, including men, wear these Grouse feet pins to fasten the corner of their kilt. It is also fashionable to wear them with a scarf. The highlands is overrun with grouse and there is still grouse hunting every year. These brooches are sometimes referred to as Ptarmigan Plaid Pins after the Ptarmigan Bird.
Wearing the grouse foot is supposed to bring good luck to the hunt (not to the Grouse). Examples of the Grouse-foot kilt pin appear as early as the 1800s and may have been part of the Victorian resurgence of Highland attire. Elaborate examples include sterling silver mounts with deer and elk representations and some examples are stamped with the term MIZPAH.
Mizpah is an emotional bond between people who are separated (either physically or by death). Is worn to signify this bond.Mizpah is a Hebrew word meaning: "wherever you are, may good fortune be with you". I was told that even without the mark the sentiment is ingrained in all Grouse Foot Pins. The citrine glass rhinestone is called a Cairngorm. The Cairngorm mountain range was the sole source of a unique mineral, a smoky quartz crystal which took its name from the mountain range in which it was found. Most cairngorm crystals were a deep, rich yellow-brown color, though there were some which were more brown-grey in color.
A small amount of ferric oxide in the quartz is what gave cairngorm stones their distinctive color, and this particular type of smoky quartz was only found in the Cairngorm mountain range of Scotland. This grouse foot pin has glass "Cairngorms" replica. All my items are true vintage or as described, all authentic and original collectable items.
