"Lovers Knot" themed pebble brooch made in Scotland circa 1880. This brooch is a delightful example of the intricately crafted Scottish jewelry made during the Victorian era. Pebble jewelry was thus named because it featured a variety of regional stones. Antique Scottish pebble brooches are always unique though there are some commonalities to the designs and themes.
This particular brooch consists of four interlockying etched sterling silver crescent shapes at the center surround by eight crescents of the same size. Each sterling crescent features a regional stone, including montrose gray agate, bloodstone, and mustard jasper. This pebble brooch would be considered a lover's knot due to the presence of the central interlocking crescent. Lover's knots were a popular motif in Victorian times representing'eternal love,''fidelity' and'commitment'. This brooch has no hallmarks which is quite common from this time but it had been tested and is sterling silver.
Lovely antique condition with stones firmly set in place and some very minor nips around the edges of a couple of the stones (see photos), a nice highly desirable even patina, and the original C-clasp which is in good working order. Length: 2 (5.1 cm). Width: 1-5/8 (4.1 cm).
Vintage and/or antique merchandise may have some degree of visible wear and/or patina. This is considered normal and can be a part of the overall appeal and charm. I do my best to mention any specific condition issues. All items are described to the best of my knowledge. My jewelry items arrive attractively packaged and ready for gifting.
