Late 1800s Scottish "lover's arrow" brooch in engraved sterling silver, Montrose gray agate and a faux paste citrine thistle come together to form an arrow arrow through a target where a thistle is popping up. This is a charming example of the intricately crafted Scottish jewelry from this era. These pins are often called pebble brooches because they feature regional stones. Pebble brooches are always unique though there are some commonalities to the designs and themes.

This kind of Scottish jewelry was made popular by Queen Victoria as it became a souvenir of her frequent trips to Scotland and her Scottish Castle Balmoral from the mid 1800s. There are no cracks or chips present on the stones as far as I can see and the original C clasp is in working order.

There is much attention to detail which I hope to have captured in my photos. Montrose agate is perhaps the most beautiful and serene of all the Scottish stones with a color that is referred to as'dove' gray, an apt and poetic term to describe the color in these stones with fine bands and variations reminiscent of the delicate patterns of bird feathers. During the Victorian era arrows were a popular symbol of romantic love while thistles symbolized strength, unity and friendship. An arrow and a thistle together make for a powerful gift of love and friendship. LENGTH: Just over 2 (5.3 cm).
