VICTORIAN SCOTTISH SILVER AGATE NECKLACE Carnelian Bloodstone MOSS AGATE 38

Superb Victorian Scottish Silver Agate Necklace c. 1870 - Carnelian Moss Agate Bloodstone Chalcedony 38 95cm. A beautiful example of Scottish Agate jewellery consisting of 41 individual agate cabochons of 12mm diameter, claw set into unbacked silver mounts, all linked together by round silver links.

Closure is by means of a simple hook and loop clasp typical of the time. The agates have been chosen with care, and nicely matched in pairs.

All the stones are proper Scottish agates, sourced from the Cairngorms, with varieties of carnelian, white and grey chalcedony, deep green moss agate and bloodstone on show, each set into open-backed circular silver mounts and held in place by four decorative bifurcated claws. The agates are beautifully glossy and they glow with light.

Each cabochon is joined to the next by a circular silver link, smaller than the cabochons but continuing the circular theme which brings harmony to the piece as a whole. The variation of each stone and the markings, stripes and dendritic inclusions make this wonderful necklace full of character and beauty. The Scottish mountain agates have rightly been prized for many centuries and were truly seen as jewels in earlier times and that is the word that always comes to me when I look at this beautiful, colourful, glowing chain.

In excellent antique condition, with no damage and only very minor wear, this is an outstanding example of it's kind. Please examine the pics closely as they form part of the description.
