Distinctive vintage Scottish silver necklace designed by renowned jeweller, John Hart and produced by Iona Silver, following in the traditions established by Alexander Ritchie on the island of Iona in the early 20th century. This necklace features seven intricate Scottish Luckenbooth symbols. Luckenbooth is a Scots word for a lockable stall or workshop and in Edinburgh, booths were situated on the Royal Mile near St Giles Cathedral. They were the city's first permanent shops, going back to the 15th century and initially housing mainly silversmiths and goldsmiths. A Luckenbooth brooch is a Scottish heart-shaped brooch, often featuring a crown above one or two intertwined hearts and typically made of silver. They represent love and loyalty, respectively and are often given as a token of friendship, affection, or betrothal. This lovely necklace is very delicate with finely crafted luckenbooths surmounted with hearts which still retain their sharp detail. Each luckenbooth is individually stamped on the back with either Silver, Iona or Scotland. There are no hallmarks however. Individual luckenbooth measures width 2cms at the widest point x 2.2cms in length. Total length 18 inches and weight, a hefty 17.9g. Demonstrate your affection or love for a special person with this very collectable necklace. This item is in the category "Jewellery & Watches\Vintage & Antique Jewellery\Necklaces & Pendants".
