Pretty and stylish Scottish Iona Luckenbooth. Sterling silver brooch by renowned Scottish silversmith, John Hart.
He originally worked with Celtic Arts Industries formed to carry on with the traditions of silversmithing in the Iona style established by Alexander Ritchie. He left to set up his own business in Glasgow in the 1950's and carried on working until his retirement in 1979. A Luckenbooth brooch is a Scottish, entwined heart-shaped brooch topped by a coronet. They are typically made of silver and may be engraved or set with stones.
The brooch measures 4.2cms x 3cms and weighs a total of 6.9g. It is stamped on the back with Hart's distinctive monogram and is hallmarked for Edinburgh with what is thought to be the date letter for 1961, although it is quite hard to read. It will be supplied in the rare, original packaging which includes the dark green box from one of the Iona Shops- this one in Oban in Argyll - the interior branding label and a descriptive leaflet. Luckenbooth brooches are a traditional Scottish love token often given as a betrothal or wedding brooch.It could be worn by a nursing mother as a charm to help her milk flow and/or be pinned to a baby's clothing to protect it from harm; being stolen by wicked fairies! It would therefore make an ideal and charming Valentine, engagement, wedding or christening gift.
